Tours for Small Groups with Their Own Transportation
A special note to visitors: Please be aware that our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) is undergoing a major renovation during fall 2011 and spring 2012. Visitors will see heavy construction inside the MRF, making the experience different from previous visits. Visitors desiring MRF-only tours may consider postponing or securing transportation for a full facility tour. The landfill portion of full facility tours remains the same. Rest assured that our tour guides are prepared to tell you all about the exciting changes taking place, and how this project will help to boost recycling in the state of RI. If you've ever wondered what happens to garbage and recyclables when they leave the curb, come visit the Central Landfill in Johnston and see for yourself! Our educators will guide you around the landfill complex to see firsthand where your garbage, leaf and yard debris, and recycling go. You will also tour the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), where you will see our staff process the recyclable material from your blue and green bin.
Trip Details
Groups with 10 or more people who can provide their own bus transportation or van with a driver can visit us M-F at 9:30 and 11:30 and Saturdays at 9:30. Have a smaller group or can't provide your own transportation? Click here. The tour is free to RI groups and lasts about 90 minutes. The first half of the facility tour takes place in your vehicle. Busses or large vans are required, and there must be one open seat for your tour guide. We can accommodate up to two vehicles at one time. Tours of our Materials Recycling Facility only are available for those carpooling groups without a bus or a van. Please indicate “MRF only tour” in the comments section below.
Schedule a Trip
Tours must be scheduled two weeks in advance. To schedule a tour, please fill out the form below. A representative from RIRRC will contact you to confirm your request. Please keep in mind that your tour is not considered "booked" until you receive confirmation from our staff. Please remember to bring a copy of your roster with you on the day of your visit. Group leaders arriving without a roster will need to fill out a form by hand. Field trips are not offered on RIRRC holidays or on Eco Depot Saturdays.
