We will shred up to 2 full recycling bins (or boxes of similar size to a recycling bin) of sensitive personal documents per family. A "sensitive personal document" is a consumer record or document that contains personal data or information from which a living individual may be identified.
Examples of what ARE considered sensitive personal documents include:
- tax returns
- mortgage applications
- bank statements
- photocopies of credit cards or drivers' licenses
- credit reports
- medical records.
Examples of items that are NOT considered "sensitive personal documents" (and will NOT be shredded) are:
- magazines
- junk mail
- greeting cards
- envelopes
- newspapers
- telephone books
- children's artwork
- wrapping paper
- business documents (material generated by a business, organization, or instutution)
- Any other paper or cardboard product that is expected to be placed in your green curbside recycling bin.
We will have a paper recyclables trailer available for any paper items that do not qualify for shredding. All materials in the trailer will be secured at our Materials Recycling Facility and processed Monday, November 21.
Are other items being accepted for recycling on RI Recycles Day?
RIRRC will be open for normal hours on RI Recycles Day as well. Residents are welcome to use our drop-off facilities while they are here, but are reminded that these services are avaliable to residents anytime we are open, and not just on RI Recycles Day. Furthermore, many cities and towns have local drop-off options for bulky or harder-to-recycle items. If you are not coming to shred documents, you should contact your DPW to find the most convenient recycling option for you. You can find their number at www.rirrc.org/local. Items that RIRRC accepts for free from residents anytime we are open (that you may also be able to drop-off in your own city or town) are:
- E-Waste: Monitors, Laptops, CPUs, Televisions (NOT "anything with a plug"). Click here to learn more.
- Rigid Plastics: Plastic buckets, drums, empty garbage containers, milk crates, kitty litter buckets, laundry baskets, lawn furniture, pet carriers, toys & playhouses, sandboxes, agricultural trays & pots, flower pots, pallets and shelving. Rigid plastics must be free of fabric and metal.
