Plastic Bag Recycling

ReStore is Rhode Island's plastic bag recycling program. RI was the first state in the nation to provide comprehensive plastic bag recycling, starting in 2005. You can find recycling containers in most RI supermarkets, big-box retailers, and pharmacies.

Which plastic bags are recyclable?

Many types of clean, dry plastic film can be recycled in the ReStore containers:

  • Plastic grocery bags, all colors
  • Fresh Produce bags
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Dry cleaning film
  • Plastic shopping bags, all colors

The basic rule of thumb is, if the plastic film stretches easily, it can be recycled through ReStore. And don't worry about separating your bags to return them to their original store-there's no need. Just bring all of your plastic bags, regardless of where they came from, to any ReStore container.
