Central Landfill

The RIRRC facility spans 1,200 acres on Shun Pike in Johnston, Rhode Island. RIRRC has owned and operated the Central Landfill since December 1980, and currently manages approximately 2,500 tons of residential and commercial waste per day. The landfill itself covers 230 acres. Our solid waste facility permit allows a landfill height of 574 feet above mean sea level, and the actual height is about 200 feet from its base to its top.

The Central Landfill is a "sanitary landfill", meaning that at Rhode Island's landfill, non-hazardous waste is spread in layers, compacted, and covered each day with a mixture of organic and inorganic material.

The Central Landfill accepts only Rhode Island-generated waste and provides disposal services to about 97 percent of the state's residents.

RIRRC accepts waste Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and on Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Tip Facility

At the Tip Facility, or "Dirty MRF", landfill crews pull recyclable materials from commercial solid waste loads, and separates the materials for sale. Some of the materials extracted from the loads are cardboard, metal, and mixed rigid plastic.
